Sharon Osbourne on Her Weight Loss Struggles – “I Went Too Far”

Sharon Osbourne has been open about her struggles with weight management over the years, trying everything from surgical procedures to diet plans and, more recently, Ozempic. While some of her efforts brought success, others came with challenges that reshaped her perspective on weight loss.
Early Weight Loss Efforts
Lap Band Surgery and Its Downsides
In 1999, Sharon Osbourne opted for gastric band surgery, which initially helped her shed over 100 pounds. However, the procedure came with complications. She later admitted that while people praised her transformation, she struggled with severe digestive issues.
“I felt like I was cheating,” she once revealed. “People would compliment me, and I’d have to excuse myself to throw up.” The discomfort led her to remove the band in 2006.
Changing Diet and Eating Habits

Recognizing that long-term success required lifestyle changes, she adjusted her approach to food. She described herself as a “food addict” and acknowledged that moderation was a challenge.
She followed a low-carb diet and even became a spokesperson for a well-known diet program. “I won’t lie—sometimes I cheat. We all do,” she admitted. Instead of feeling guilty, she focused on getting back on track after occasional indulgences.
Turning to Ozempic for Weight Loss
Initial Success with the Medication
In 2023, Sharon Osbourne started using Ozempic, a medication primarily designed for type 2 diabetes but frequently prescribed off-label for weight loss. She spoke candidly about its effects, noting that it significantly reduced her appetite.
“When you’ve tried everything and someone offers a simple injection that makes you lose weight, it’s tempting,” she said in an interview.
Unintended Side Effects
While Ozempic led to noticeable weight loss, it also caused unwanted side effects. During the initial weeks, she experienced nausea and vomiting. “At first, I felt sick all the time,” she recalled. “After a few weeks, it went away, but I just didn’t feel hungry anymore.”
Losing Too Much Weight
By late 2023, she had lost 42 pounds and was struggling to maintain a healthy weight. She admitted that she had gone below 100 pounds, a number she felt was too low.
“I used Ozempic for a year, and the weight just kept dropping,” she shared. “Now, I’m under seven stone, and I can’t gain it back.” Her husband, Ozzy Osbourne, voiced his concern, noting that she had become too thin.
Struggles with Regaining Weight

Despite wanting to gain a few pounds back, Sharon Osbourne found it difficult. She expressed frustration, stating that her body was not responding to her efforts. “I’m too thin, and no matter what I eat, I can’t seem to put the weight back on.”
During a television appearance, she acknowledged that she had pushed her weight loss too far. “I think I overdid it,” she admitted. “Looking back, I wish I had been more cautious.”
Moving Away from Extreme Weight Loss
At 72, she has decided to step away from extreme dieting and weight loss measures. In a 2024 interview, she shared that she was now focused on embracing a healthier, more balanced approach.
“I’ve finally reached a point where I accept my body for what it is,” she stated. “I’m done with the endless cycle of weight loss and cosmetic changes.”
Her experience serves as a reminder that while weight loss medications and procedures can be effective, they also come with risks. Finding a sustainable and healthy balance remains the most important goal.
